BIO Oceans Association

The Bedford Institute of Oceanography Oceans Association is a group of retired public servants previously involved in Ocean Science and Hydrography. Our members include former staff from the full range of scientific, engineering, technical and administrative groups all having a common bond: an interest in BIO. An unusual feature of the Institute has always been a very slow turnover rate of staff compared to many government agencies. We found that we could forge rewarding careers without leaving BIO – and many of our members spent much of their time as public servants on the BIO campus. This resulted in a sense of fellowship that we do not wish to lose after our formal association with the Institute has ceased. The retirees association preserves this connection and membership is open to anyone who shares our goals.

The Association has a vested interest in the history of BIO history. We have a good collection of documents and artefacts from the early days of BIO through to the present time. This collection provides insight into the nature of the scientific and administrative challenges that were overcome in the past and will help guide future action in a more complete context.

Some of our members have continued as ‘scientific emeritus’ doing studies and research which contributes to Canadian oceanography. Their work helps ensure that the knowledge built up over many years can be passed to the next generation of BIO oceanographers as the process of staff renewal replaces the old timers. We also have an interest in education and are available as volunteer tutors, lecturers and tour guides as the need arises. Our social activities include annual events such as a summer picnic, winter social evening, travel club and bridge club.
